More melamine tainted milk found in China

Two factory bosses have been detained after the discovery of more baby milk tainted with melamine. Two years after a previous scandal in which six babies died and 300,000 became ill, China is still struggling to eradicate the use of melamine in baby milk production.

The chemical, used to make plastics, is put into foods to make it appear to have a higher protein content, but it can cause kidney problems.

Food inspectors traced the source of the melamine-laced milk to the Dongyuan Dairy Factory in the neighbouring province of Qinghai, where they seized another 64 tons of raw dairy products.

Samples of the factory's milk powder had up to 500 times the maximum allowed level of melamine, the agency quoted officials in Gansu as saying.

Nationwide tests in 2008 found that many milk products in China, including those of most leading brands, contained high levels of melamine, an industrial chemical used to artificially boost protein levels and raise producers' profits.
