Mattel recalls long list of toys
Toy firm Mattel has announced a worldwide recall
of a reported 18 million toys (including nearly two million sold in the
UK and Ireland) amid concerns about paint. Less than two weeks ago,
Mattel recalled 94,000 Chinese-made Fisher-Price toys after concerns
about lead in the paint and the new recall affects Polly Pocket toys,
Batman and Pixar Cars toys, as well as others.The Polly Pocket toys, made in China, are being recalled because of fears the magnets may come loose, and die-cast car toys are being recalled due to lead levels in the paint.
The full list of recalled products is below.
Mattel has introduced a new checking system in the wake of problems with paint used by one of its Chinese suppliers.
All of the recalled products were made between January 2002 and January 31, 2007, and were sold to customers before January.
Mattel chief Robert Eckert said: "The safety of children is our primary concern, and we are deeply apologetic to everyone affected. Mattel has rigorous procedures, and we will continue to be vigilant and unforgiving in enforcing quality and safety."
The scandal is so huge that the owner of one Chinese factory involved has committed suicide. Zhang Shuhong, head of the Lee Der Industrial Company, was reported by a state-owned newspaper to have killed himself following China's decision to impose an export ban on the firm.

Affected vehicles have a serial number on the bottom ending "7EA".
